SASANIAN KINGS. Hormizd IV, 579-590. Drachm (Silver, 32 mm, 3.06 g, 4 h), Armenian type, struck in the late 6th or early 7th century AD, RY 6. Draped bust resembling Hormazd IV to right, wearing an elaborate crown surmounted by a korymbos; crescent behind crown, star in crescent before; a crescent on the left shoulder; behind head, ‘ʾp̄zwd’ = ‘abzūd’ (‘increased’ in deteriorated Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾwhlmzd’ = ‘Ohrmazd’ (‘Hormazd’ in deteriorated Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, ‘ŠTA’ = ‘šaš’ (‘six’ in deteriorated Pahlavi); to right, ‘ẔWẔN'’ = ‘drahm’ (‘drachm’ in Pahlavi). Cf. Zeno 109365. Very rare. Struck from worn dies and with some crystallization and scratches, otherwise, very fine.
